The old 700MHz server with 256MB of RAM is a thing of the past. AMWhalen.com and all pages therein are now being hosted on a 1.8GHz P4 machine with 784MB of RAM. To put this into different terms, this upgrade has literally tripled the RAM, and increased the CPU speed by a factor of about 2.5. Aside from the hardware upgrade, the server now runs Fedora Core 4, instead of the old RedHat 8.0. I’m hoping these upgrades won’t affect any functions of the site, but we’ll see.
This puts the total number of servers which have hosted AMWhalen.com at 4:
- (7/25/01->8/22/02) Intel Pentium 1, 166MHz with 80MB EDO RAM
- (8/22/02->12/14/03) Intel Celeron, 333MHz with 256MB SDRAM
- (12/14/03->7/3/05) Intel Pentium 3, 700MHz with 256MB SDRAM
- (7/3/05->?) Intel Pentium 4, 1.8GHz with 784MB SDRAM
Each server has approximately doubled the speed of its predecessor. This current upgrade marks the largest jump yet.
With everything this server hosts, this new speed and memory will help out a lot.
